Teaching ESL in Europe
With its many obvious attractions, numerous countries and regions and high standard of living Europe has long been a popular destination to teach English abroad. It is, of course, an incredibly diverse area with just under 50 countries and countless more languages. Teaching in Madrid, for example, will be quite a different experience to teaching in Moscow.

Western Europe has long been a favourite with English teachers. With no need to give up the comforts of western living, plus respectable salaries, teaching in Europe is a great way to experience life in another country. Transport in and between countries is excellent, though can at times be expensive. Many are attracted to the warmth of the Mediterranean. Spain, Italy and Greece are more popular than ever.

Since the fall of communism two decades ago, Eastern Europe has emerged to become a new and attractive TEFL destination. Inevitably, pay and conditions can’t match those of the west but jobs are numerous and requirements often minimal, making it ideal for those starting out teaching.

European Union citizens will not need working visas to work in other EU countries. They may well, though, have to apply for residence permits and register with the relevant authorities. Outside the mainland EU area known as the Schengen zone, red tape is pretty thick and few concessions are given to fellow Europeans.

Non-EU passport holders face difficulties getting working papers inside the European Union. In a few cases it simply won’t be possible to obtain them. In countries like Spain, where attitudes in general to regulations are a little more relaxed, many don’t work legally. Anyone considering this path needs to do their homework to avoid making a costly mistake.
